I was thinking this the other day. But I think that a £70k house only seems affordable now I'm on decent money. It wasn't then

Yeah I feel poor too. Neighbours are whizzing around in brand new cars, hauling back shed loads of designer gear at weekends, but still look like miserable gits.

Maybe I'm a tight-arse who doesn't mind being seen in a rust-bucket praying my clothes will come back into fashion someday, but I bet many of them are living it up on the plastic.

Maybe I should feel better about being debt free, mortgage free, and generally free to do what the f I want. Whhooohoooo!

My first prop'er job in 1996 paid me a handsome 15 grand it did. Back then, a nice 3 bed semi would cost around 70k.

My last permie job a couple of years back paid around 60k, and the same house on my street was worth £250k.

Even tho I earn more now as a contractor, I still feel poor.

That explains some of the property price boom then. Today's 200 grand house is still really only 132 grand in real terms. It's the pound that's lost value not the house that's gained it.

I dunno, my daily rate is almost about back to where it was in 1999/2000. Of course £1 today is worth about a third less than it was then.

Currently review alot of Indian CV's for permy roles based in India these days an average developer there wants £10k - £12.5k we just cant compete with that.

£1000 / day contracts?

Interim management (contracts) is where the big £££ are, got a relative on £1800 a day, was Director level permy in his day, his contracts are usally 6months to 18months.
