“ A fifth vaccine, made by the US company Johnson & Johnson, has shown efficacy against the coronavirus and could transform prospects for protecting both the UK and the rest of the world, because it needs only a single dose.

The vaccine, made by the US giant’s subsidiary Janssen, based in the Netherlands, was trialled in the UK – and the British government has bought 30m doses. The EU has ordered 400m doses.

The company said it had 72% efficacy in preventing Covid in the US but a lower rate of 66% was observed globally in the large trial conducted across three continents and against multiple variants.

The results of the trials have been much anticipated, because the Janssen vaccine can be given as a single injection. That means stocks will go further, and particularly in lower-income countries an immunisation programme will be easier as there is no need for a recall after three or 12 weeks.”

Yet, while Johnson hit out at the EU for weighing export controls on vaccines, the British government itself has a list of 174 medicines that are currently banned from export from the U.K., because they “are needed for UK patients.” Additions to the list in 2020 included around 100 medicines that have been suggested as possible treatments for COVID-19 patients or are being used to alleviate symptoms of COVID-19 patients in intensive care units.

In addition, the list includes flu vaccines, which while not directly used to treat COVID-19, are considered a critical public health tool in combating the virus, by reducing other pressures on the National Health Service.

Also on the list are a host of medicines associated with intensive care and long periods of intubation, while breathing is supported mechanically. While not solely used to treat specific COVID symptoms they were needed to prepare hospitals for an influx of intensive care patients suffering from severe cases of the disease.

So to summarise. It's fine for Astra Zeneca to reserve UK manufactured vaccines for the British, but if the EU reciprocates, it's an "outrage". Mike Graham's eyes were bulging on Talk Radio and he had a hate hour against the EU.

Did I also hear correctly that the UK selfishly ordered way more doses than we actually need? I was only half paying attention to someone bleating on the radio this morning.

The vaccine manufactured in the UK is reserved exclusively for the British and they're also importing vaccine from the EU. In fact the December doses of the Astra-Zeneca vaccine actually came from the EU.

it wasn’t (and still isn’t) known how long vaccines will last whilst still remaining effective, given that costs per person are like a tenner that’s no brainer to order a lot more
