By offering him a lower graded job they are trying to get out of paying redundancy. AFAIK as long as the role is commensuate (sp?) to the level of the person (i.e. not a £5k p.a. cleaner role for a cheif exec) then even if he doesnt accept then he cannot claim redundancy money as he was offered alternative work.

Spot on. In this case the role is being given to a jnr mmber of staff, so technically the role still exists. Sounds like they just want shut of the more expensive guy - seems an odd way to do it though. Why not simply make his role so horrible that he would resign.
