Joy Divison: Love will tear us apart.

    When routine bites hard
    And ambitions are low
    And resentment rides high
    But emotions won't grow
    And we're changing our ways
    Taking different roads
Love, love will tear us apart again
Love, love will tear us apart again
Why is the bedroom so cold?
    Turned away on your side
    Is my timing that flawed?
    Our respect run so dry?
    Yet there's still this appeal
That we've kept through our lives
But love, love will tear us apart again
Love, love will tear us apart again
Do you cry out in your sleep?
    All my failings exposed
Gets a taste in my mouth
    As desperation takes hold
    And it's something so good
    Just can't function no more?
Love, love will tear us apart again
Love, love will tear us apart again
Love, love will tear us apart again
Love, love will tear up apart again

Anyone who's loved and failed will know what he means....

Queen, hands down - their music amazing, but only listen to now and again.

Their Live Aid set in 1985 was incredible. I saw them at the famed Knebworth gig the next year and it didn't quite hit the heights for me. Probably because there were a bazillion fans and it felt like I was a mile from the stage. However, I've only ever seen two singers live with more charisma than Freddie Mercury. One was James Brown and the other was Dave Lee Roth (solo, not in Van Halen.) A bit like the Bo Rap video above, he came on stage and after one minute received a two minute standing ovation. I've seen many hundreds of live acts but nothing else like that.

Used to know a guy called Thor whose Dad was in Hawkwind. Turned out it was short for Denethor. We reckoned that it was the best available LotR character name after the other band members had picked off the good names.

I watched some Queen concert last year on the TV, Brian May was charging about like a total fanny with these god awful never-ending guitar solos. I assumed he was on some cocaine binge where he though they sounded good. I quite liked Mercury, thought he was talented, but when he got to the stadium gig days of queen he too ended up looking like a fanny with the top off and crowns and tulip. Shame.

I do like the Three Sides Live album by Genesis.

And, of course, there's always Kate Bush.
