They may have been last in the line but my 20-something relations and acquaintances computer studies or IT classes consisted of them practicing their knowledge of how to use Microsoft products. They actually learnt how to use them at home like most people.
What's worse one of them even learnt rudimentary programming at school aged 11-12 but then was forced to "learn" the MS products.

If you sell 100 cups an hour, then £4/hour in wages difference is 4p per cup. No wonder we get immigrants in..Originally posted by Paddy View PostIt's not even 30p A good latte will cost 40p in milk and coffee, 2p electricity 10p machine depreciation say a total of £1. Sell it for £2.30 and sell 100 per hour. = £230.00 less cost of wages etc £10. A difference wages is not that much. 5p to 10p per cup.

Don't make me laugh, they were last in line to get it working.Microsoft made computing all drag and drop.
PARC
Xerox PARC has been the inventor and incubator of many elements of modern computing in the contemporary office work place:
Laser printers
Computer-generated bitmap graphics
The graphical user interface, featuring windows and icons, operated with a mouse
The WYSIWYG text editor
Interpress, a resolution-independent graphical page-description language and the precursor to PostScript
Ethernet as a local-area computer network
Fully formed object-oriented programming in the Smalltalk programming language and integrated development environment.
Model–view–controller software architecture

Obsolete knowledge. Microsoft made computing all drag and drop. Getting hands dirty when programming is now just copying and pasting from StackOverflow.

Your mum had to show you how to use a spoon.Originally posted by Hobosapien View PostFor the House of Lords, sure, those duffers are too old but those in the House of Parliament should mostly be young enough to have had computers around when they were growing up.
These days the kids seem born with an iPad in their hands. At least it's not an iPhone, taking a selfie on the way out, yet. The generation equivalent to the one that first learnt how to programme a VCR and had to show the oldies.
Your move smart arse.

Having the majority in government that just don't understand technology doesn't help either.

Sadly you could be correct.Originally posted by Hobosapien View PostOf those offering it maybe it's not that popular either. Overheard a woman on the train the other weekend going on about how her daughter had to go into the computer science class as her first choice wasn't available (presumably oversubscribed or she wasn't of standard), and as she hadn't chosen to take the class she was being ignored by the teacher so was unlikely to pass anyway.
Back in my day, at the dawn of home computing, there was a draw for the 30 odd computer studies places as nearly all the pupils wanted to go on it as it was so new. Some of the girls that made the cut seemed to spend lots of time doing ascii art from what I remember, maybe they could't get onto the art class.
