I tend to get searched whenever I am going through an airport. Long hair and a slightly dark complextion seems to make them panic a little!!!

I got pulled over before boarding the flight to the US a couple of years ago, searched my hand luggage and turned on my laptop to watch it boot up. Was just me and a bunch of middle eastern looking guys... I was told that my name had been flagged up by the US security services and not to be surpised if I got the same at the other end. The guy said "Don't give them any jip at all or they will hold you for 72 hours..."

I'd been sharing a lot of rt.com and zerohedge articles at the time and commenting on a lot of Syria/Ukraine/MH17 type stuff...

Been back twice since then and it has been fine but I've toned down my social media quite a bit as well...

*EDIT* - Nothing happened at the other end except they (SFO) kept us all waiting 2 hours get through passport control. Wasn't the most pleasant flight I've had anticipating being interrogated by uncle Sam.

Even the staff get the false positive alarm when going through the staff gates. Even the CEO of the airport or head of security, even when everyone knows who they are and they've been though that gate 5 times that day, full pat down, shoes off etc. - no exceptions.

The full body scanner may become compulsory but at the moment it isn't. They have SLAs with the airlines and regulatory targets to hit regarding queue times through the gates and at this time of year are processing ~2500 passengers/hour 24/7 on average through each terminal.

People don't want to go through the full body scanner but will then complain if they have to queue for too long and don't get long enough in the IDL or end up having to run for their plane...

It's all getting more and more automated and biometric. RFID chips anyone?

Whereas there are absolutely no health concerns at all with 4 litre diesels, amirite?

I do believe the false positive rate has been increased.

The health concerns are only really a worry if you're going to spend all day every day in one. For the few seconds you're in there you're not going to be exposed to anything that will cause any issue. You get more radiation exposure from the flight itself, about 100 times more, and it lasts a good 75% of the flight, not a few seconds.

Are airport body scanners a radiation risk? - BBC News There's probably a real science paper on it somewhere but not sure this audience will cope with the large words.

I guess you gotta pick which fight you prefer.
