I do believe the false positive rate has been increased.Originally posted by malvolio View PostYou do realise those initial scanners are set to give around 1 in 20 false positives anyway...
The health concerns are only really a worry if you're going to spend all day every day in one. For the few seconds you're in there you're not going to be exposed to anything that will cause any issue. You get more radiation exposure from the flight itself, about 100 times more, and it lasts a good 75% of the flight, not a few seconds.
Are airport body scanners a radiation risk? - BBC News There's probably a real science paper on it somewhere but not sure this audience will cope with the large words.
I guess you gotta pick which fight you prefer.Comment

Indeed they do.Originally posted by SueEllen View PostThey also target particular people to be searched both inbound and outbound. I use to know a Sikh guy - yes with a typical Sikh name - who was searched every single time he went out through a British airport.
My other halfs Jamaican, she gets searched every single time she leaves a British airport.
Luckily for me they leave me alone

Even the staff get the false positive alarm when going through the staff gates. Even the CEO of the airport or head of security, even when everyone knows who they are and they've been though that gate 5 times that day, full pat down, shoes off etc. - no exceptions.Originally posted by malvolio View PostYou do realise those initial scanners are set to give around 1 in 20 false positives anyway...
The full body scanner may become compulsory but at the moment it isn't. They have SLAs with the airlines and regulatory targets to hit regarding queue times through the gates and at this time of year are processing ~2500 passengers/hour 24/7 on average through each terminal.
People don't want to go through the full body scanner but will then complain if they have to queue for too long and don't get long enough in the IDL or end up having to run for their plane...
It's all getting more and more automated and biometric. RFID chips anyone?"Is someone you don't like allowed to say something you don't like? If that is the case then we have free speech."- Elon MuskComment
