Trump has a licensing deal in Turkey so it's easy to focus on that, but this is not as important as the fact that Turkey allows US military to use the country's air bases where the US keeps tactical nuclear weapons. That's worth a phone call.

Given the cost and burden of hosting 3 million refugees at your doorstep I doubt Turkey would sponsor the key proponent of destabilisation in the region. The benefit from illegitimate oil revenues simply would not stack up.

This is quickly becoming a garish nightmare Shakespeare himself would have struggled to articulate.

Donald Trump has congratulated Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on his victory in Sunday's referendum that gave him sweeping new powers.

The US president's phone call contrasts with concern by European leaders who have pointed out how the result - 51.4% in favour of the changes - has exposed deep splits in Turkish society.
Mr Erdogan has rejected criticism from international monitors who said he had been favoured by an "unequal campaign".
"Know your place," he told them.

The narrow victory was ruled valid by Turkey's electoral body, despite claims of irregularities by the opposition.
