Some multi-millionaires are being given as much as £50,000 in taxpayers' money so the UK can meet the EU's renewable energy targets
The extraordinary deals mean the wealthy landowners are guaranteed to get the payments for 20 years. Almost £800million has been set aside to cover the payments this year and costs are expected to rise to more than £1billion by 2020. Meanwhile thousands of homeowners across the country struggle to heat their homes and pay their winter bills.How wealthy can rake in £50k a year
Landowners agree to install biomass boilers instead of using oil or electricity. Equipment and installation can cost £100,000.
Estates with at least two buildings can join the commercial RHI scheme guaranteeing benefits for 20 years instead of seven under the domestic version.
The landowner sends a meter reading to regulator Ofgem every three months. The estate is paid according to the heat used.
Payments can be tens of thousands of pounds a year and usually cover installation costs in five to eight years. The estate owner can then keep claiming for up to 20 years.
There is a cap of about 1,314 hours per year to stop people using heat endlessly.
Payments are at the maximum rate up to the cap, then at a lower rate which just covers the cost of using the biomass boiler.
Landowners can charge tenants of homes on the estate for the heat they use as well as claiming the government money.
Outdoor swimming pools can have biomass heating but cannot be claimed for.
