Just go to a local golf pro for a few lessons. The lessons that you had 15 years ago are long forgotten. Its the drills that you need to practice, immediately after your lessons which build the "muscle memory".
He/she will have clubs for you to use in the lesson. If you are that keen, its so easy & inexepnsive to be fitted for clubs these days (by a PGA Pro - don't "fit yourself").
£100 lessons worth more than £700 set of clubs.
Please don't waste your money on the Wilson "package deal" - they are for the man who wants to have a set and never use them. You can get a much better set, second hand, which will be a better set, particularly the "woods / hybrids".

Thanks for all the tips. I did have some lessons about 15 yrs ago so I'm not completely awful but do need to spend some more time working on my swing.
I'm currently using a friends spares so thought that getting my own set would be a good next step.

My advice would be to avoid getting anything longer than a rescue/hybrid club (i.e. forget about the 3 wood and driver for a year or two). I'm a Mizuno fan so look for something like their JPX-850's (I wouldn't recommend getting anything cheaper or more expensive at this stage. Go for Pitching Wedge through to 4 iron and then add a hybrid/rescue club instead of a 3 iron). Then the putter. Around 40% of shots in a round are putts so clearly that's an area most golfers would do well to practice, instead of just rifling 75 drives down the range). However, you do need to be able to get off the tee. The rescue/hybrid will probably give you 180 - 210 yards (when you can hit it properly) off the tee, which is enough to carry most hazards yet leave you short of the fairway bunkers. Two of those and you can reach most par 4 greens.
I'd agree with spending money on lessons at the outset just to get the basics right but personally I wouldn't go beyond that. I went down the route of striving for the perfect swing and it totally ruined my game for about 3 years until it got to the stage I couldn't hit a ball, literally. Then I packed in the lessons completely and 'found' my own swing in my own time. It's still a work in progress, such is the nature of the sport, but I'm getting there.
Oh, and be prepared for nothing but years of frustration.

Costco ...Originally posted by LondonManc View PostAt that price, they're all pretty similar. If you can get some Taylor Made or Ping on offer, go for it. Otherwise you may as well pop into Costco and get their latest offering (they usually have a golf bag and clubs offer on).

Yeah I think you're right. Any tips on brands?Originally posted by original PM View PostIf you are a genuine 28 handicapper then you just want a set of cheap bats from Amazon for about 150.
Getting more expensive bats will not have anywhere near the same impact on your game as a few lessons and lots of practice.

So you want to go swinging with the boys and you are looking for local clubs.
Right!

You did say "decent". If you want cheap, crap clubs, then any Charity shop will have plenty. If you are a crap golfer, then don't buy crap clubs. Considering that a round of golf costs you anywhere between £30 - £150 per round, it is a false economy.Originally posted by VillageContractor View PostErrrr..... whatever is the worst

Well, don't buy off a website - you need to get the feel for them.
I'd suggest going to somewhere like American Golf (check their website for your nearest store Golf Clubs and Golf Equipment Online - American Golf ) and pick up something from there.
