Make sure you have exec serviced apartment, ground transport, maid/cook (try figuring out a Japanese supermarket), per diem & RTN flights for your whole family in your contract before considering it. Then consider that your wife may find it novel for a couple of months, but then if she is stuck at home with the kids while you are working she might get bored & those RTN flights may come in handy to visit the family.

Depends who you are working for, but the likes of Deloitte, PWC & Sofrecom etc, who are quite active in that part of the world shouldn't have a problem conjuring up a package like that. If your are stumping up for these yourself knock £7K at least off you rate to get a quality of life similar to what you experience in MUC. Expat life of a good quality is expensive in JPN.

My experience is, without children these contracts can be wonderful. With young children you have to plan very carefully so that your partner doesn't get bored out of her mind with no social life and resents you for it. After the honeymoon period the novelty of pointing at everything because you do not speak Japanese wears off.

*Edit, working hours are JPN are insane. Leaving the office before your boss is culturally unacceptable so you will mostly be heading home at 22:00.

Are you sure he they pay for him to fly F? My experience is (and that of the contents of the CCR in T5) is that the F cabin is full of Gold upgrade voucher holders, Avios redeemers, GGL cardholders 241ing, holiday makers, people who live on flyer talk waiting for ex-DUB/OSL/CPH fares or celebrities & those of us on the sign off chain in a multinational with a spend visible to the airline's board meaning we hold a Premier card or get the magic bleep at the gate. Apart from last two categories everyone has booked months in advance.

(All the above interchangeable with LH first class terminal & HON C card)

The only corporates I know to pay full fare F are media when flying talent (and people accompanying them). Most of them have a J-UP deal agreed anyway as it's publicity for the airline.

So if it is the case, which I doubt, that he is getting full fare F paid for by the company (as business travel requires on those days / short notice) tell him to trade the ticket for a vMCO, put himself & his wife in J and kids in WT+.

To give you an example. On a frequent route I use, our corporate J fare is €2134 - Full flex F €16,000 odd.

*BTW you would have to be mad to pay for BA's F product. They have a captive market & most of us who fly it call it J+.

Monday starts, Friday departures from Asia are insane and a quick way to get broken. The fact that he is actually flying these days indicates that he is flying Y discounted, because he would be flexing his tickets if full Y, I/J or A/F.

This is a hellish way to live. Corporate travel policies have become ridiculous. Poor guy.

As a contractor I always invoiced travel + VAT. I would never have accepted to be tacked on to a corporate travel policy.

You mate should brush up his negotiating skills. Paid day off after long haul flight when flying to Asia or at the very least flown out on a Friday with an expensed weekend thrown in if Monday meeting.

Clientco should understand, because every meeting in Japan is punctuated by phone calls from every stakeholder (who just happens not to have any decision making power whatsoever) getting each action cleared by whomever they report to. Long drawn out affairs.
