I'm on my third contract since starting a couple of years ago. First one was 15 miles from home, second was 10 miles, this one is 30 miles, so I've never had to stay away.
Varies a lot. I've been within reach of home for the last couple of years, and also for around twelve months a couple of years before that. But overall, I've worked away much more.
I've been pretty lucky compared to most on here, never had to work away from home, and the longest commute I've had has been 1.5 hours on train/bus last summer due a train line being closed (only lasted 6 weeks or so and it went back down to an hour).
Current contract has been a pleasant surprise. We moved to our new house in June, having no idea there were any IT places nearby.
From leaving home to sitting my arse at the desk takes just under an hour. A perfect commute for me, any longer and it would be boring, any shorter and I'd still be in grumpy twunt mode.
