This. If the parents flat was already let out, and the rental arrangement with son is no different, he will be able to claim housing benefit.

Could be true, I have to admit I don't like the idea of people on benefits, loads of sprogs moving onto a nice road. Lots of people on here working hard to afford it.

Thanks to some of the links I understand how it possible on benefits to afford it.

Add this all up to around £1685, or the equivalent salary of £24500 a year

So £1000 a month after housing costs, budget right and that can go a long way
Thanks for the links, I'm pretty amazed that benefits are so high.

The question is whether it is contrived on not. If the tenancy only exists to secure an HB claim then (in theory) forget it, if not contrived then it is OK. A popular fraud was/is "you rent mine, I'll rent yours".

This is in fact the general rule and doesn't have to be family member. It is just much more likely with family members.

    - Eviction on non payment of rent (in accordance with legal aspects of course)
    - Would it otherwise be let on the open market
    - Would the let still happen if it were not for housing benefit

There is one weird one which catches a few people though (unfairly I think). It appears that you are barred from claiming housing benefit renting from an ex for a home that was previously shared. I'm not sure how far this goes but a friend found themselves in this situation after splitting up and HB was denied; though when they moved across the road it was then granted.

I understand £750 is not a lot for private renting. But when you work part time, less than 16 hours I find it hard to understand how its possible to afford that rent. Have 2 cars etc.

    It's a 3 bedroom.
