You are missing one very important point McGuids...the swiss, unlike the English, actually are capable of making things happen. they dont just f8ck around for years discussing something to death (cross rail)...they make it happen!

That might be too difficult for the Home Office which seems to have 'incompetance is our watchword' as it's motto. Hows about deporting those who have completed their sentence first. (who will therefore not re-offend and thereby will not be coming back to prison, at least in the UK)

Yes, they are. Same in Italy as well as pointed out in the Economist a couple of weeks ago. There's little point in countries like France and the UK getting tough on illegals and throwing a few out because they just go to Spain, wait 12 months or so picking tomatoes while waiting for the next amnesty, then collect their EU passport enabling them to live and claim benefits anywhere in the EU.

It would seem that the number of prison cells available is down to less than 150...

new labour solution - lock up pensioners who refuse to pay council tax, but 'reclassify' others so they can be let out / put in open prisons.

Which bearing in mind the debacle of 4-6 weeks ago at Ford Open Prison where it turned out murderers, rapists and paedophiles had been placed there, and reguarly absconded, is not a particularly encouraging sign.
