I thought ELO was obsolete these days? I was 1480 ish as a young teenager. Online i tended to score much higher because a lot of people don't take it seriously and you skim a few points overtime someone gets bored half way through.

To get any good you really have to spend time reading book. Learning openings etc.Originally posted by Gumbo Robot View PostI've never really played. Is there anywhere online where one can learn the game? Or is it better to get some software? Probably best of all to have someone teach me but I don't know anyone that plays.
Apart from that chess.com is good. Or was - i haven't looked in ages.

The doc offered me an operation to make it 10 inches but I just told him straight there was no way he was cutting it in half.Originally posted by MarillionFan View PostI was 10 inches when I was sixteen but as I've got older and I like a drink I'm lucky if it hits 8.5.
What is the OP boasting about again???

I got 1635 and my actual rating is 1670 so it is not too bad (although I did rush a little as I was under time pressure)Originally posted by mudskipper View PostI got 1580, however, having dabbled with online chess I know my real rating is much lower.

I got 1580, however, having dabbled with online chess I know my real rating is much lower.Originally posted by d000hg View PostFrom The Automated Chess Rating Utility
However I don't really have any idea what that means (let alone how accurate that little test is) as I know absolutely nothing about chess ratings. Is this the standard system or is FIDE different?

Jesus, that is some score.Originally posted by Chantho View PostI used to have a FIDE rating of 2415, down slightly now....
My friend was at 2200 something at one point and was British under 16 champion in his youth
I have funny stories about him and the chess federation which are probably not for public consumption

WHS +1. I could have written exactly the same...Originally posted by d000hg View PostI used to be pretty good as a kid - played for my county once - but never got rates. When I've tried playing as an adult, it's incredibly frustrating because I can remember how easy it used to be, but it's like my brain is full of fog. Unpleasant.
