The Sun's claim that Mr Blair will go next summer has not been denied in Downing Street and Sky News' Political Editor Adam Boulton says it is being assumed in Westminster that the news is correct.
"This is now fantastically messy for the Prime Minister," said Boulton.
"Senior MPs and many commentators are saying the party may not stand for this (timetable) and will expect Mr Blair to be out by Christmas.
"He is clearly on the defensive. He is clearly on the run."
John McDonnell, chair of the socialist Campaign Group of Labour MPs, has confirmed he will launch his own campaign to succeed Mr Blair.
Boulton said there would undoubtedly be an election for a successor with some on the left of the Labour party opposed to the Chancellor, Gordon Brown, taking over without a contest.
Hang on a minute !!!! yeah yeah you can all have your silly little in house ramblings and squabbling but, WE THE VOTING PUBLIC DONT GET A SAY ON THIS DO WE !
There is in point of fact no constitutional reason (except tradition) for the leader of the largest party to be PM. TB could resign as Leader of the Labour Party tomorrow and still retain the job of PM.
As stated earlier, you don't get a vote on who leads the Labour party unless you belong to it. 12 months ago (or so) us grown ups got a vote as to which party was allowed to run the country - ask your parents who they voted for. The leader of that party becomes the PM. If they choose to change the leader (and as a consequence the PM) then it is a party matter.
As the saggy cloth cat which emily loves said - Did we get to vote on John Major?
In fact you dont even get to do that I belive, unless you are a sitting MP. Party members get to select their local candidates, most of the time, but not the PM etc. That priviledge is reserved for members of the Palimentary Party, i.e. MPs.

I remember John Major standing down as Leader of the Tory Party, but still remained PM. Sadly, he got voted back in as Leader on that occassion, but imagine the turmoil if he hadn't won that particular vote...

I think you'll find the Tories vote themselves in. Howard wanted this changed soon after he left, but the cronies have probably forgotten all about it by now...
