Still missing the point then. Dole bludger gets on his Alienware gaming PC, goes on his fibre optic broadband and jumps on jobserve, spuriously applying for every role he sees. He then prints out a list of those and takes them to the job centre, saying "Look Mr Dole Man, I've applied for 32000 jobs this week". The point being, the dole have no ******' idea, except that he seems to be applying for jobs and he gets all that accountability tulip out of the road in 30 mins rather than buying papers, looking in them etc etc. If you're naïve enough to think that people are too honest to do that, then I have your 32 MILLION DOLLAR inheritance in a Nigerian bank account. All I need is your $500 legal fees by Western Union and a copy of your passport.

I get that and assume the kind of people who that applies to (i.e happy to keep claiming benefits and just applying for jobs to keep the government off their back) are more likely to be applying for jobs they see in the mainstream press rather than Jobserve etc. What role was it that you got hundreds of benefits claimants applying for? I take it you are not a specialist IT agency then?

By "those" I meant those who are currently unemployed and NOT a Contractor applying for their next assignment, but simply applying for a job... to keep receiving said benefits.

Yes, probably 98% of the applicants have right to work in the UK.

BUT.... whether they're suitable for the job is a completely different matter.

Really? Don't think too many contractors are claiming dole money while simultaneously applying for £600 a day IB roles!! The only time I signed on was for 2 weeks after leaving uni many moons ago before I landed my first job in IT, granted I've only ever been benched for 2 weeks since contracting.

As an example, we have advertised for a role, City of London, and have had 343 (and counting) applicants since last Friday. There has been 6 suitable candidates apply.

I think (part of) the reason for this (and it has got much worse over the past 6 months) is that those claiming Tax Credits/Benefits are having to prove to the Job Centre that they are actively applying for positions...

We have certainly seen an increase in unsuitable applicants - which only makes it harder to find the GOOD applicants for the jobs...

My current clientCo finds it incredibly difficult to hire. Possibly why I'm looking at a 6 month boom in the next couple of days.

I can hear the guys on the phone interviewing all day and evidently 99.9% of candidates (*edited out - forgot which board this was*) aren't very good (there are hardly ever any interviews).

100 applications? Sure. >5% competent candidates? No.

Completely agree with this. On my last contract AND my current one, they're really struggling for good software engineers/developers, esp C++. My old boss spent entire days interviewing, and then onto this new contract, they're relying so much on referrals to filter the sub-standards.

There's your problem. 450/day in Central London is peanuts ...and we know what you get when paying peanuts!
