Invest in things that provide passive income, i.e. real estate, dividend paying shares, automated business etc. Not just one but diversify so if one stops paying you still have income. When your passive income > outgoings you can reinvest the excess into more assets until you can retire and spend all your time on CUK #winning!

Seems a minefield-maybe better to save the £, found out the pru does expensive policies (£65/month) that cover you till 65 but the monthly payouts are not very much compared to your full wage.

Critical illness are less likely to pay out than income protection as they will every visit to a doctor before you took out your policy as claiming you knew about your illness.

alexf2828 there are other threads on here on income protection - do a search.

The best insurance policy is to save up your own money and ignore all these policies. Most of them are impossible to claim against even if you were the most solidly employed employee in the history of the UK and with a rock-solid case for a claim. As a contractor, you've about as much chance of successfully claiming as you have of being the next Dalai Lama. Even then, most of these policies have hidden buy-out clauses where they can pay you off at a pittance as they see fit.

The regulators should have clamped down on these policies at the same time they did the PPI stuff, just as big a con but with greater consequences for people who think they can rely on it in an emergency.
