Different Client, Same Agency

Hi all,

Just seen a role I want for which I'm a very good fit (ahem). The interesting bit is that the agency who are trying to match the role are the same ones I'm with at my current gig.

The agent mentioned that there is some protocol about this, agency has agreement with clients not to switch their staff around and leave clients without a resource, so he went off to talk to somebody senior.

I was wondering how this might play out. This new role (no job description) has a requirement that means they will have a hard time trying to fill it, the role I'm in now is a common or garden variety for which they could find another resource (if client agreed).

I could hand my notice in here, but without a signed contract I've no idea in what state the project is in for this role (capex signed etc.)

So anybody any idea what the agencies do in this situation?

An agency once contacted me within 24 hours about 2 different roles. The second one was my most favoured (it was working on the filth's systems!). Had the first interview and got an offer on the drive home. Said I wanted to see how the second role played out.

On the way to the interview, the agent phoned again and asked if I'd accept the first. Said not until I'd had chance of the second.

On the drive home from the 2nd, they phoned again, would I accept the first job now? I started to smell a rat and said I'd see what the offer was on the 2nd interview.

Next day, they phoned again saying 2nd client had discounted me so would I take the first. I tried to play it out but it was really wasting time and by the end of the day had said yes.

I later found out from someone else who went to the second client that no decision was made on who to offer the role to until a fortnight after the agent told me I'd been discounted!

*******! I realised then that they had probably said to the client I was accepting the first role so made a decision never to go for 2 roles through the same agency at the same time ever again.

As far as the OP is concerned, as the 2nd job is through the same agency, they wont submit you for the other position. If the OP terminates, they still wont put you forward to teach you a lesson.

You need to find another agent who has this role and get them to submit you. If you can.

Apart from TF's excellent suggestion I can't see it working however much you justify it to yourself. The agent will have no trouble filling the other role, it is their job and their living and it is hardly boom time. He doesn't care what the score is at your current client as long as he is happy and the agent is getting his money.

When you say agent, you mean same company or same person? If they are two different people there will also be a battle between them. One guy/gal isn't going to give his commission up to then have to work to fill the role again and just gift his colleague with some free money.

Mention it by all means but becareful about causing a fuss where the client and agent doesn't see there needs to be one.

They are two different people so you are right no one is going to give up their commission. Ah well, such is life.
