I've been through similar checks working for banks in Aus where they've done a 10 year work history check through a company called First Advantage who are a bunch of muppets which was a total nightmare and took 4 months end to end. i eventually gave up and took another contract with another bank which only had me sign a statutuory delcaration stating that i had no criminal record. the check was performed after i had taken the role.
    Unfortunately he is serious.

The checks have become much more stringent in banking/finance in the UK.

As someone from "overseas", you will need a shed-load of paperwork to prove exactly what you've been doing for the last 10 years. And any gaps will set of alarm bells, so be ready for that.

I've been through 2 checks in the last 2 years, and they've both been a pain-in-the-ass - and I'm born-n-bred in the UK and have never lived or worked anywhere else.

If they can't prove what you have been doing end to end it will get messy providing evidence of what you were up to.

Have your bank statements ready for any periods they cannot investigate to speed up the the process.

Usually includes both. In my experience, the screening companies are just given a "hit list" of things they are required to check, and a timescale to which all those apply. It can vary per client and per screening company, so you won't really know the detail until you are asked to fill in the screening form.

Check for UK folk goes back 5 years. The guys from Aus. I've spoken to have all been asked to provide 10 years worth of verifiable work history, as that's what the client has insisted on. So be prepared to go that far back, if required.

I plan to contract when I come back most likely in financial services or insurance. I have been told by some mates that the employment screening in the uk is now very thorough and can take a fair bit of time. Does anyone know how long it takes for a screening check on someone who has lived in aus and the uk? I dont want to apply for jobs in finance if its going to take 3 months to do the check. Do you know how far they go back into your credit history in the uk also. I think I've got something recorded against my credit record because of a cancelled gym membership in 2005. Also how many years of address history do they request as I can't remember half the places I lived in London. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.

nope. i haven't acknowledged the gym debt. i stupidly ignored the threatening letters thinking i wouldn't return to the uk. i checked the CCJ register and there is nothing there but can't get access to my credit file because i don't have a uk address to validate against as i've not lived since 2005. will take my chances and see what happens.

    thanks for the advice.

don't have any CCjs as I was able to check that last night online. can't get access to my old credit record either as I don't have a current UK address they can validate which is a total pain. thanks for the advice
