Picked up a number of contract roles through linkedin (by knowing who to contact when I hear about an opportunity)
Picked up a number of long term relationships through it.
Picked up quite a few contractors who I've gone on to place (although less these days for some reason).
Picked up my current employment through LinkedIn.
Not the contractors view, obviously - but it works for me.

I've been approached by a few agents for roles and by some companies directly as a result of LinkedIn. But not converted any of them. Virtual job-hunting: Technology fills situations vacant
I was reading an article on Marketwatch last night about US Tech companies using social media sites more and more to hire people... and how the move is towards people who have high emotional quotient or emotional intelligence.
Then I found this on the BBC site:
BBC News - Virtual job-hunting: Technology fills situations vacant
I suspect the UK is going to be trailing the US in this. From what I have read on here people have not been successful with sites like linkedin in finding direct clients.
I have to admit that I do get a lot of firms contacting me direct via Monster but all have been in the US or EU so far.
