The simple and short answer as I expected was that there were far too many applicants with "bonus" skills which were a more exact match and they could afford to be as picky as they like in the Wintel field.

Ask your friend to find out why you weren't shortlisted, this is the starting point..

Skill Swap?
Hi Guys,
First post here but have been a voyeur of the forum for a long time.
I have been predominantly Microsoft technologies jack of all trades i.e Server/Desktop administration or 1st, 2nd and 3rd line support. I am a very quick learner as most of us have to be to keep contracts when we find out the role requires knowledge we don't already possess. The old Curriculum Vitae doesn't seem to be getting much play recently. I am getting past the pimps but not as far as interview.
As everyone already knows the market is in rag and everybody is finding it hard coming off the bench! My question is, what are the best skills to have at the moment in terms of supply and demand from a technical non-managerial view?
I am looking to retrain myself and have been looking at SAP, Oracle, Unix administration or Cisco. Can anyone offer any advice as to what's best? ( not limited to the above ).
