A number of us have told you that the contract you were offered was too good to be true. As far as I am concerned, you only have yourself to blame for this. You were probably entitled to redundancy pay whilst you were a permie.... You think that your boss is thick because he cannot use Facebook? Well, I guess he had the last laugh then! Greed breeds stoopidity.
If he really was a permie, made to go contract and then fired - so that the company could avoid redundancy, he really is entitled to a significant payoff. (way more that the minimum redundancy amounts that should be payable).

£10k - £20K is quite possible in this case. He simply need to contact his CAB who will put him in touch with a solicitor well versed in employment laws. Go for it.
1. Blackmail your boss into keeping you on.
2. Win the lottery, donate it to your company and tell them to keep you on.
3. Look for a notice period in your contract and hopefully there's one that says, "1 year".
