    err, it's intended to be an ironic comment and everyone else who's posted seemed to get it.

    Thanks to those who took the time to post constructive and courteous comments.

    Line manager is being ousted - so difficult to discuss with him! There's a restructure going on which is all extremely cloak and dagger. Overall the organisation is, quite frankly, not the type of Machiavellian place I want to be part of. But if I am stuck there, then so be it.

    Notices

    As a pimp (yes, i know, i know) we have a mutual 1 month period each way (due to my client needing security clearances) however I have always found my clients very open to discussion about notices as having a disgruntled contractor is normally worse than having no contractor. I would recommend speaking to your line manager with the client and once agreed, speak to your agency because as agents we are pretty beholding to our clients and are not going to go against their wishes if we wish to maintain and build proffesional relationships.

    Also, trying to bully people into sticking to long notices can be against the legal movement of the work force.

    This is surprisingly common, and some contractors seem to like the fact that they can be binned without notice, but cannot give notice themselves.

    Anyway, it's very simple to terminate the contract, with or without clauses. Just ask to leave and come to amicable arrangement. 1 or 2 weeks is enough for them to find a replacement.

    Alternatively by breaking the contract! Just don't bother turning up. Do this after your timesheets are signed. If later asked for reason state medical or personal.

    You mean they have to give you 4 weeks? Where I am now it's 1 week from them, no notice allowed from me.
    No its not an abuse - as the contract is between companies not you & them (hopefully)
    Some contracts have that clause, others dont. I have known it to be negotiable on no-notice contracts - esp if they were looking to cut headcount.

    Read the small print again. Very common for contracts to be weighted in theh favour of the client.

    Why did you sign a contract you wish to terminate? Seriously - is the work not what you thought it would be?

    People who sign and walk are people who give contracting a bad name.

In my haste, as a relative newcomer to the world of contracting, I did not read the small print of the contract.. I know, I know....! (Anyway, it's a good and very salutary lesson for the future). The irony of course is that the agency can terminate my contract with four weeks notice as can the client - but I am stuck until the end of the contract. Please someone tell me that this is an abuse of my human rights and that of course I can terminate it too.....!
