I agree - I have credit checked agencies in the past if I haven't worked for them before.

    What's the problem?

It's the client insisting on credit checks, not the agency. Mandatory in the City (and elsewhere) dear boy. If you are planning to work in finance and you've had defaults/CCJs etc, don't bother.
    C'est la vie.

gwildfire, If the agent has asked permission for a credit check its normally because financials do not employ staff (perm or contr) with CCJs

Go on - who is it? Don;t tell me that there is an insolvent agency that I'm not working through - I'm obviously slipping ...

I'd still ask the same questions of the contact you have with the agency. Give him the same excuses that you're getting about why you need to do a check on him personally.

Maybe then he'll see the futility of the exercise.

As far as I know some agencies use an external provider to do the checking, and they normally take out a single package with provider which covers CCJ, criminal record and reference checks.

Can't see why they would need to know if you have any CCj's. You aren't paying them anything so what does it matter? Finance industry (even though not a bank) ?

Not a bank, and I dont think they can check your personally without permission from you? (provisions of the Data Protection act and the consumer credit act)

Sure check the company, and mores to the point what happens if they think credit isnt brill so bye! Its also not a condition of the contract they gave me. What next ref from my School teachers from 15 years ago?

One added advantage of doing a credit check on your agency is that it may strengthen your hand on payment terms. I checked mine before signing contracts and negotiated weekily invoices on 14 days from monthly invoiced on 28 days because of the exposure against recomended credit limits.

If the role is in a bank then you may be credit checked as a security measure. I have been in the past. Seems like bull to me too, but they want to make sure you're not going to jump ship with a couple of CDs with all the customer's personal data on them. What? Eh? Oh.

I should be credit checking them not the other way round!
Sounds like a load of rubbish to me - their contract is with your Limited, so it makes no odds what your personal credit level is like.

They can do it anyway - at least they are telling you about it. But you don't have to make it easy for them by disclosing past addresses etc. etc.

Of course, you could say to the particular guy at the agency that you want all his details, to get him personally checked out as well.

No need to actually do it, of course, but get the same information they request of you about the actual person you are dealing with rather than the company, and see how he/she reacts to that.
