Jas, do it now. It'll save you stress and rushing about later.
Get a good accountant - I used www.mmti.co.uk who specialises in IT contractors and provides a good personal service. He opened the Ltd for me for a small extra charge (it's easy but I really could not be bothered to save a few quid).

I'd do it now. Its one more job out of the way. Also, if you tend to be disorganised (like myself), then I'd find an accountant and have them set it all up for you. They will do all the registrations and register for VAT for you.

You will probably have time to do it once you've been offered a contract, but it may make more sense to get the ball rolling now if you are certain you will be contracting.
You can set up a company in 24 hours and get an accountant in the same timeframe (you may want to read up some posts on here about accountants so you know who you're going to use before you need one).
The company bank account takes longer. The VAT registration takes ages but you can trade without it having applied for it.
Why wait around though?

Sarting new contract
Do I need to set up my ltd company before I start searching and applying for my first contract or can I do this as and when I feel is right?
