The last two agents who handled your previous contracts.

No need to handle the details over of any client managers.

On a few public sector roles I've also had agent saying its part of an SLA with the client.

Yup, was asked the same yesterday. First time actually. But very bare faced; asked for the details of my 'hiring manager'. I politely said I never give references before an offer. Will probably never hear from him again.

Agent told me 2 references would speed up my application. After refusing just 2 days later I get an email to say the 'contract' has somehow been filled internally. I'd be amazed if the role ever existed in the 1st place

Did the pimp tell you who the client is?

    too many times

just think about it..... if a pimp can make £10 off you and sell their grandmother(s) to do so, they will.

if you push back and they insist..... they clearly feel that antagonizing you won't impact their bottomline anyway. (i.e. the role isn't real, they aren't putting you forward for the role etc)

I have hired as perm manager and contractor PM before and have never requested for references (how comfortable I feel with them trumps all other considerations). Frankly, you wouldn't be giving me a reference who ain't your mate isn't it?

In any case - the few times I have been contacted as a reference / referee whilst in the perm role, I have fobbed them off to HR as my employer had a very strict procedure to refer all such requests to them and absolutely not even give a verbal one, due to legal reasons.
