My friend has a valid SC. His SC was granted on OCT-2013 and valid till SEP-2023. When transfer was initiated from company A to company B, SC was granted till 2020? stating they ( I do not know who they are!) can transfer only for 7 years?

    Is this the case?

Yes depends on the supplier (from what I remember, need to check my emails), they removed a few years off my SC when I transferred it to the MOJ which essentially then meant it was going to expire the same year. They were good enough though to let me renew through them.

There is nothing you can do about it and you don't find this out until they actually do the transfer.

The clearance is for however long they decide ("They" being a combination of MI5, MI6 and the vetting authorities). They decide how long it runs for on a range of parameters and in line with Cabinet Office policies, which are oddly enough not in the public domain...

And if you've read the thread you will know that the clearance goes with the role, not the person. It could be that role is due to stop in 2020 so your friend (well done, BTW) won't need it after that point.

However, it doesn't mean it's usable for that length of time: if you move away from a role that required clearance, it lapses after a year (in fact, it lapses immediately but they are happy to carry it over in most - but not all - circumstances)

    Sorry "My friend" = "me".

    No-one cares but it's amusing.
