A group of Labour MPs tried this in 1981, and they didn't gain much traction. They ended up merging with the Liberals, in 1988, to form the LibDems.

If they join up with disaffected Tories and go big to cover the whole Country then they might be an alternative to vote for. The problem for many is that there's no effective choice so end up voting traditionally whatever ones sentiment. The time is ripe for an alternative.
