However Brexiteers don't care because they are inclined - to a greater or lesser degree - to believe 'free' trade is an unalloyed good thing. I believe the reverse although I accept it's a matter of opinion. It has been good at times in the past but that doesn't mean it's good at this point. Brexiteers will however not believe Brexit made things worse. There will always be someone else to attach the blame to.

    Why was it not upgraded to make bigger more premium products?

    Thats how a lot of places will be closed after Brexit - it will take 7-10 years of stopped investment, so that MORONS who voted for Brexit will never make a connection

    Michelin have been pulling out of the UK for the last 5 years. Cost of production is too high, their plants are on land that is over-valued. The transportation infrastructure is outdated and delivery costs are too high. Finally, their main customers are not investing in the UK.

    The UK used to be a global centre of excellence for manufacturing and design. This was driven by an education system that was available for local talent to attend, irrespective of their ability to pay for it, and support for local industry.

    Brexit is not the cause, Brexit is part of the explanation. You reap what you sow.

    More than 1,400 British jobs are at risk after two European suppliers of car parts, Schaeffler and Michelin, announced plans to close UK factories in a blow to the wider automotive industry ahead of Brexit.

    Schaeffler, the German car parts supplier, said uncertainty surrounding Brexit had contributed to its decision to close two UK factories, in Llanelli, Wales, and Plymouth, where 570 people are employed. The company said the closures would take place over the next two years.

    French tyremaker Michelin announced plans to close its factory in Dundee in 2020, nearly 50 years after it opened and where 845 people are employed. It blamed dwindling demand for smaller tyres. It said the decision was unrelated to the Brexit vote.

    At Schaeffler’s plant in Plymouth, a workforce of 350 people makes bearings and machine parts for the firm’s industrial division as well as the aerospace and defence industries.

    At Llanelli, about 220 people are employed to make mechanical parts and bearings for the major car manufacturers and other industrial suppliers. The company said it would relocate production from the two UK factories to existing plants in the US, China, South Korea and Germany.
