Construction industry warns of Brexit 'cliff edge' over EU workers

The construction sector has come together to warn the Government of the danger to the industry if there is a "cliff edge" for vital EU workers created by Brexit, as it targets building 300,000 homes a year.

Official statistics suggest that 12.6pc of construction workers across the UK are foreign-born, of which 5.7pc are from EU-accession countries, such as Romania. That proportion rises to around 50pc in London and the South East.

The sector is also suffering from a skills shortage caused by a cocktail of an ageing population and a lack of new entrants, put off by the boom and bust cycle; in the next 10 years the workforce will decrease by 20-25pc. Some, including Mark Farmer who wrote a Government report on the issue called "Modernise or die", suggest that this can be partially made up for by advances in off-site manufacturing of homes.

The sector has committed to recruiting and training more UK workers to mitigate the loss of EU migrants and reduce its future reliance on that labour, but it added that "there will likely remain an ongoing need for significant levels of skilled EU workers".

Been walking around south Bristol this morning and nearly all of Templemeads is under redevelopment. Problem is that Bristol seems to be full of non-job "processors" that just do <stuff> Im not sure that we should still be building for office space given the pending boom in work that will remove manual processing from the map of jobs...

So when unemployment goes up, is it an effect of an outbreak of laziness?

That's great so all the government has to do is to cut the dole by 10% and the construction industry will be inundated with applications.

This one is a bit of a non-issue, the CIS is relatively well established and can bring foreign labor easily enough for the construction sector.

Of course the big construction companies would like you to believe there will be work force shortage so they can much more easily explain the low number of new builds. They don't want you to know about their cartel that is chocking the supply of new builds to keep the prices high, while sitting on 1000's of approved planning permissions.

So to summarise all the potential construction workers than can earn up to 30 grand a year are busy lapping it up on the dole to claim their 35 pound a week. Good that we have a Tory government that are busy sorting out the problem.

If everyone is leaving due to BREXIT do we need many construction workers? After all, most of the property being built is sold to BTL investors using the banks money (leverage) to buy and then rent to EU workers.

No EU workers, no renters, no renters, no BTL, no BTL, no need for house building, no house building, no need for EU construction workers...
