Working for a US company
I'm currently a normal UK permanent employee working for a UK company, so my PAYE is taken care of and all is well.
I'm considering a position with a US based firm who don't have any UK presence, so I'd effectively need to contract my time to them. I'm trying to get details from a couple of other guys doing the same thing (they tell me they've not bothered registering their own company etc., and just do self-assessment).
Reading around though, it all seems a lot more complex than this, with things like IR35 (I can't determine if I'd be in or out, but if In it looks like you pay employers AND employee NI).
The company want me to come up with a figure for them, so I'm trying to work out how all the tax will work so I can establish how much they'd need to pay me so I'm no worse off than my current job (including things like pensions/life insurance blah blah)
A few points that may be relevant:
- I would be working from home
- I'd be expected to work fairly normal fixed hours Mon - Fri
- They won't provide me with any equipment (I would need to use my own PC, broadband etc)
- I may periodically need to go to the US for meetings etc.
In short- I'm not necessarily looking for the best way to move money around to reduce my tax burden to a minimum, I'm quite happy to pay the same level I would do as a normal employee in the UK, but I'm not sure how to go about it...Tags: None
