If you were always expecting to be working in one location for more than 24 months then you might never have been able to claim any expenses at all...

Google for HMRC guides 480 (and possibly 490, I forget which).

You say your work is mainly in London? Does that mean you have been travelling there for over 2 years or 40% of the time? He could mean you have fallen foul of the 2 year rule.

Apart from that what do you not ask him why and ask him to back up his statement?

    Claiming travel expenses

My accountant advised me in March this year that the government would be changing rules so that I would no longer be able to claim for my travel expenses this tax year.

I’m a freelancer with a Limited company, my work is mainly in London. I used to retain any rail tickets, car park ticket and petrol receipts and draw these as expenses each month, that was standard procedure up to and including the last tax year. Can anyone give me their advice or have a link to an HMRC or other site that backs up what my accountant had read and the government did indeed change the rules on travel expense claiming.

    Greatly appreciated
Working...
