Haven't you heard of Third party insurance, and Third Party, Fire and Theft?

Legally you only need a Third Party policy to drive a car or other motorised vehicle on the road in the UK.

Which as you guessed it only pays out to the other people or for others property if you cause an accident.

It's often cheaper if you have a banger to get a comprehensible policy then put an excess for your own losses as the same as the cost of the car, then to take out a TPF&T policy.

It's the damn actuarial models that are to blame.

I always check the quotes for both and quite often there is no difference in price. I've had commuting to multiple places of work or "use for the policy holder's business" in various years. Normally the SDP+commuting insurance states that using the car for "business" trips where you get a mileage allowance paid is OK.

WTF is this "commuting to a single place of work" restriction they try to put on us though? There is usually no extra to pay if you commute to multiple places but sure as hell you know they would use it to try and wriggle out of a claim if you ticked the wrong box or didn't tick the commuting box and you drove to work once in a blue moon. Bloody insurance companies, ripoff bastards.

I always get a quote for standard insurance, do the usual negotiations then ask for class 1 business use to be added, I don't think it's ever been more than a few quid on top.

Car Insurance - Business use: Class 1

I have use Business use: Class 1 for as long as I can remember but chatting to a number of contractors here they are using just the basic Social, Domestic & Pleasure Including Commuting level. We had a debate around this as the latter states 'includes using your car for driving to a single, fixed place of work. ' The counter argument is that we count our place of work as a temporary place of work for IR35 but claim it is our permanent one for insurance which seems a bit stupid. Business use states 'allows use of the vehicle for commuting to more than once place of work, and journeys such as visiting clients/associates.'

I don't know if Class 1 adds a lot to my insurance as I never asked for a quote for Social, Domestic.

    What do you guys have?

If SDP is £100 and Business Class 1 is £150 can you claim the £50 back from the company as this is extra is wholly and exclusively for the business?
