You can, but it will be subject to BIK tax as the mileage allowance you should be paying yourself covers the extra insurance costs.

Ahhh, I didn't need this "performance insurance" for a Mondeo!

I renewed my insurance recently & as I now use my car for business I decided to try a quote to include business travel.

It was cheaper with business than it was with SDP&C

I guess it depends on how much annual mileage you do. I put down 9000 a year (50/50 private/business).

I upgraded to the lowest level of business cover with my insurer, which covers commuting to multiple workplaces, and it cost virtually nothing extra. Maybe an extra 5 GBP a year or something insignificant like that.

Why not just ask the insurance company if the pattern of work is covered by normal policy? If staying in same place all week and only travelling longer distances at w/e you may well find it is.

Depends on your insurer what you will need. And any cost too of course.

Generally I have found (as it appears did VectraMan) that the difference for "use in connection with the policy holders business - exclduing commercial travelling and hire/reward" is small.

Equally most insurers will take travel to/from one place as equivalent to commuting and cover it as SDP+commuting. However if your client wants you to visit another of their sites you ain't insured (in much the same way as most permies using their own car to pop to the office across town or whatever often will not be insured).

I have it (on both cars). It seemed a bit much to claim that it's your permanent place of work for insurance and it's not your permanent place of work for expenses. Only costs a little extra.

I had to have it for my last permanent (as if there is such a thing) job driving between sites.
The company previously had cover for us, but dropped it without telling anyone.
My manager rang his insurance company about it and they reduced the premium.
So it may even pay you to get it.

I play safe and go for business use - thats what the 40p per mile is supposed to contribute towards. In real terms it makes very little difference to my premium

    Business car insurance

If you are a contractor do you have to get insurance for business use of your car or does commuting to a single place of work cover you if you go to the same place everyday?

If you then use your car to go to a different site for a day do you have to get business car insurance?
