Don't panic. The assignment means the current contract, not the project. Until you've signed the contract (or turned up on April 4th) then you're free to walk. If you get the perm job and get a start date, make it very clear to your current client that you aren't staying but do it politely.

Your contract will end. You do not need to take the extension so it's your choice...
If you do take the extension you cannot give notice. If you leave mid contract it's likely you'll be in breach of contract and in theory could be held to damages but most likely just not get your last months pay or whatever your cycle is.
That said clients won't want contractors around that don't want to be there so I'm sure as long as you don't rock in and say I'm gone Friday I am sure they can work something out. They may not be too pleased if it becomes apparent they were just a stop gap for you and you were just messing them about. It could go either way depending on how you handle it.
How you handle this now is up to you but maybe honesty is the best ploy?

Firstly, you've accepted the contract extension. But since it's verbal, the client may have difficulty in proving that you accepted the offer if they wanted to.
So in the absence of that, your contract ends on April 1st - if you accept the extension to take you past that, then you cannot give notice (unless you negotiate that clause down / away when you extend).

Help with regards to notice period
Hi everyone,
I need your help. Basically I have an upcoming interview for a permanent position. My contract is ending 1st April even though my manager wants to extend my contract (still yet to receive contract extension on umbrella company website). The notice period says "NO NOTICE YOU MUST COMPLETE THE ASSIGNMENT.*** A maximum of 28 working days service shall be provided before". I am worried that if I get a job offer and want to leave. Will it cause any problems? Especially since before I found out that I had an interview, I said to my manager that I accept the contract extension even though I am still waiting for my umbrella company to give me a contract extension offer.
