That looks remarkably like what my staircase will look like shortly, except the door is higher up at the far end of the stairwell.. I made a cupboard over the stairs for all the late missus's odd's and ends. It has a door just like that (except it opens the other way) and the room looks virtually the same. Now starting to remove the cupboard, the door will be done later as probably need a pro to restore the plaster wall.
