I've just been working on a PIC sonar thingie that I built last year to prove some embedded software off the web thingie.

One of our esteemed students has taken it into its head to do a *chinese copy of this sonar thingie to include in its final year project.


*chinese copy: something replicated down to the last error in construction.

Purely out of interest & seeing what a pig's ear it had made of its chinese copy I thought I'd see if my breadboard still worked...

Oddly enough, it was completely & utterly tits up.

The ultrasonic transmitter was no longer connected to anything... and there seemed to be a lot of hum & ripple around...

This was because several wires had been misplaced, not to mention the missing / incorrectly postitioned transistors.

Fixed that & got the transmitter working.

The receiver circuit had misplaced components too, and when I replaced the wrong ones with the right ones, it oscillated its brains out...

Because a decoupling capacitor was now in the wrong place.

And back to front....

Never been off, just had other things to do...

Finally, the LED cathode drivers had been jiggered about so that only 3 worked...

After about 45 mins I actually got it working again...

I suspect it will take far longer to get the chinese copy version working, but I'll probably have to do it because no one else will...
