What I learned was it is different for everyone and there is no one solution.
However, the most useful book was one of Allen Carr's book "Easy Way to Stop Smoking" (or some similar name). It did not stop me smoking (it does for many) but it is packed with loads of useful advice to make it easier. Worth reading.

One of his (he's dead now, by the way - lung cancer! - oh the irony) bits of advice is:
if you fall off the wagon, don't worry about it. Carry on being a smoker for the rest of that day. But, in the morning gather the fags, matches, lighter and throw them away (preferably destroy them). Then wash the ash trays. Better yet, get someone else to do this. Then, you are a non-smoker again. Carry on as a non-smoker. If, a few months later, you fall off the wagon, don't worry about it. Repeat as required. It is better to smoke 10 fags 4 times a year than 20 fags 365 times a year.
NB: but don't go in for "social smoking". There's no such thing. Social smoking is like casual heroin use.Drivelling in TPD is not a mental health issue. We're just community blogging, that's all.
