It's a thankless task attempting to get them to use the simulator to run their code... rather than the mindless hack, program, test routine most of them use...
Coding sheets. That'll sort 'em.
Having to write out your code long hand for the keypunch operators to put onto card really focusses the mind.
Granted I don't think I ever got a program right without at least one edit, but I worked with a few ICL mainframe programmers who regularly would.
But it does help when you bench test and correct your code with a rubber because all the available CPU cycles have been sold to customers by the bureau sales department!
