We were taught BASIC at college as one of the languages we had to learn. The first thing we were told: use a GOTO and you are expelled.

They meant it.

This was BASIC-11 on a PDP-11 where structured programming was an option with proper functions and procecures.

So we all did a project in BASIC with not a single GOTO between us.

Having the temptation and being forbidden to use it is excellent training.

One of the reasons I hate C is the regular use of gotos: 'break' in particular.

Occasionally code is more complex without a goto - but it should be the exception.
