... around the time that the father of a friend of mine fled South Africa with a briefcase full of cash.

He's sent his wife & kids here 'on holiday' and left the next day himself 'for a business trip'.

The abandoned all their belongings (cars, house, business, house contents, etc.) except for a suitcase of clothes and a LARGE lump sum.

They did it because their eldest son had received his national service call-up.

Too tight to pay a thousand Rand to buy him out?

We had to wait until 1976 for the go-faster Z80...

The only processor for which I made the effort to memorise the assembler codes ... initially on something from USA that came as a bag of components + circuit diagram and then again on the ZX Spectrum.

Knowing assembler and a bit of electronics + a ZX Spectrum + a dongle that converted its output port into a bunch of sockets you could put plugs into = all manner of programmable burglar alarms, timers, train set controller...

Happy days.

Maplins has a USB port to bunch-of-sockets converter kit ... I was tempted to ask for it for Xmas. But what to make when I had it?
