We put in a common, user-specified, user validated, corporate solution that the end users themselves felt they were responsible for.

We got great input and a positive response from the business areas because they all felt they were getting listened to.

Where one area wanted a particular feature we would ask the other areas and get their response. This resulted in everyone feeling listened to and allowed the business areas to act as a kind of 'user group'.

When an area knew they were the only ones wanting something, they would be responsive to going without it.

"Going without" wasn't a problem because almost always, when one area had a particular requirement, it turned out they were doing something unnecessary or wrong anyway! They would usually change their business processes to conform to how the other areas worked.

This was how most of the benefit was achieved. By all 14 areas changing their working practices to take on the best practices of the other 13 it made immense efficiency improvements.

Across the organisation, it was probably seemed trivial but the savings were easily in the order of tens of millions of quid.

From an IT perspective, we had managed to put in a senior management approved, common solution to all those business areas that had never before worked in a co-ordinated way.
