Disconnecting the 5" processor fan means the motherboard cannot tell it has failed.

That must be quite a CPU cooler if it has a 5" fan.

Plugging in an old 3" fan (that uses the drive power connectors, for some reason) and leaning it against the fins of the processor's heat sink seems to be working.

I had a similar arrangement on a PC I was using at Apricot. Worked for years.
