It doesn't help that the server's USB ports are only version 1 ports.
The external hard drives require v2 USB ports.

There are two active WiFi access points because the house is split by a thick wall.

I have gone for a mains-based network solution.

I've got a pair of gadgets, each of which plug into a mains socket. Each has a ethernet port.
One WiFi modem router is plugged in to one in one part of the house and the other WiFi router is plugged in to the other in the other part of the house.
From each router ethernet leads go out to form each part of the LAN.
