The server ran WinGate. That provided NAT and acted as a firewall and provided a web cache and other good things. Previously, it provided internet access for the rest of the network either through dial-up or via a USB ASDL modem.

Now I have a modem that provides ethernet ports, I don't need to use the server for that.

The modem also seems to act as a sufficiently robust firewall. And does NAT, of course.

So what is my server now for?

The server stores the data for Quicken.

It has a large drive I use to keep a copy of anything I download.

Unlikely as it may seem, there is none.

If I put the large drive into one of the desktops (that'll be mine then) as a 2nd hard drive, and move the Quicken data, then I think the server is redundant.

Whereas NF would go to bed at this point, I'll listen to a Hercule Poirot story instead.

Going by the shipping forecast, it's not nice out there.

The first hard drive has been copied to external backup drive.

The Quicken data has been backed up to floppy disk, using Quicken's own backup mechanism.
