When I tried to learn a language in the past (Russian) I intentionally dropped myself into a village miles away from anywhere and realised that if I didn't speak Russian, I was going to starve .

Worked a treat. Three months later, passable Russian language skills, which I keep up by reading Kommersant when I can and by watching Russian TV.

Congrats on learning Russian, I know I could never do that without having lessons as well.
