Well
I've written the bit fiddling code for my LCD...
And, stunningly enough, it works...
I thought it was broken at first, then I cleared the variables at power up & voila! it started working correctly.

Horrendous code though, but not quite as unpleasant as I'd anticipated (considering that it's on a PIC).Comment
