Interesting that David Brin doesn't reckon that Costner's take on the book in the film is all that bad.

All the reviews I've ever seen have been uniformly dire.

What did you think of it? I recall Costner received a similar panning for Waterworld.

Probably not your thing but am busy reading 'The Big Nowhere' by James Ellroy. Right up my street that is. Excellent book.

I have a James Elroy somewhere in my pile of unread books.

I don't read very much fiction these days... I think the last ones I read were the final Ed McBain 87th Precinct novels and the 2nd Foundation Trilogy novels (the ones written by people who weren't Isaac Asimov).

Worth watching I'd say, not a great movie but not a complete waste of 177 minutes. Likewise I thought Waterworld was watchable, as do many of the comments on IMDB.
