I wanted to go to math faculty in local Uni because it was the only place where IT was taught, there was no special IT courses back then, they would have accepted me since I was known there - I actually won some Uni IT award while I was still in school - I was competing against students, in a way what I did was plagiarism (but my implementation) though, but that's another story.
But at the time USSR was crumbling and I joined Finance course - it was the most popular at the time, competition about 10 people per place.
